5 x 5: MOE says can use Singlish, salmon sushi isn’t Japanese plus other stories

By June 13, 20165 x 5

TL;DR – Everything you need to know daily, summarised for you at 5pm.

1) MOE say can use Singlish in compo

According to the Ministry of Education, students will not be penalised if they use Singlish terms “appropriately” i.e. Singlish words should be used only appropriately, usually in direct speech.

For example, a student will not be penalised for writing sentences such as “I have decided to ‘sabo’ my friend and play a nasty prank on him”; or “She is by nature a ‘kiasu’ person and will wake up extra early to queue for the latest release”.

Standard English grammar still has to apply.

2) Salmon sushi isn’t Japanese

Neither is salmon sashimi.

They are Norwegian.

The photo of 18-year-old Hallee Sorenson was posted to Facebook by her cousin Rebecca Lyn who wrote about how “Hallee sat at her party anxiously waiting for her friends to arrive so they could have fun….but Hallee’s friends would never arrive. Not a single one.”
