TL; DR – Your chance to play Top Gun!
After a 5-year hiatus, the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) Open House is BACK this Saturday and Sunday (May 21 to 22) at the Paya Lebar Air Base.
Themed Defending Our Skies, here are 5 awesome reasons why we think you should bring your entire family to check them out this weekend:
1) Thrilling aerial displays
The RSAF Open House 2016 will feature thrilling aerial displays by the RSAF’s F-15SG and F-16C multi-role fighter aircraft, and capabilities demonstration of the GBAD systems, Surface-to-air Python-5 and DERby (SPYDER) and Mechanised IGLA, which form part of the RSAF’s multi-layered air defence. There will also be a showcase of air-land operations involving the AH-64D Apache attack helicopters and CH-47 Chinook helicopters.
This 30-minute action-packed demonstration, at the Grandstand venue, will run at 10:30am and 2:30pm on 21 May (Saturday), and at 11:30am and 4:30pm on 22 May (Sunday).
2) Watch the SAF Red Lions Parachute Team jump
Our national pride, the Singapore Armed Forces Parachute Team (SAFPT) also known as the Red Lions is synonymous with its free-fall displays at the annual National Day Parade. They won’t be at this year’s NDP so this is probably your best chance to catch them in action!
3) Static Displays
Visitors can look forward to static displays of 20 types of advanced aircraft and weapon systems that they can get up close and personal with. The static displays include fighter aircraft like the F-15SG, F-16D+ and the F-16C (with the Black Knights paint scheme); G550-AEW surveillance aircraft; transport aircraft like the C-130 and Fokker-50; KC-135R air-to-air refuelling aircraft; and UAVs like the Heron-1 and Hermes 450. The helicopters on display include the AH-64D attack helicopter, CH-47 Chinook, AS332 Super Puma, and S-70B Seahawk, while the GBAD systems such as the SPYDER, Improved HAWK, RBS 70, Mechanised IGLA and Mounted-Portable Search and Target Acquisition Radar (MPSTAR) will also be showcased. Other systems on display include the Mobile Air Traffic Control (MATC) and the Air-Land Tactical Control Centre (ALTaCC) cabins.
4) SAF Military Working Dog Unit
Dog lovers will be happy to know about the security and enforcement operations demonstrations conducted by the SAF Military Working Dog Unit (at the K9 Demo Area). There will also be weapon arming demonstrations of the F-15SG and F-16D+ fighter aircraft (at the Static Display Area) and live performances (at the Performance Hall) by the SAF Band and participating schools such as NTU, NUS and Republic Polytechnic.
5) Uniform Photo Booth
A chance for the little ones (and the young at heart) to play Top Gun, visitors can also take a souvenir photo of themselves in the pilot flight suits or other RSAF uniforms from the photo booth.
